WE ARE CONNECTED TO THE LAND.
WE ARE CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER.
WE ARE CONNECTED TO OUR COMMUNITY.

COUNCIL INITIATIVES

WHAT GUIDES US

School Council fosters and develops several initiatives and projects that enhance student education, community development and the school environment.

In general, we align council initiatives and projects with our school values: we are connected to the land, we are connected to each other, and we are connected to our community.

Do you have an idea for an initiative or project that aligns with our values or contributes to the school and the local community in a meaningful way?

If so, join us at a council meeting to tell us about it.

CURRENT PROJECTS

GRANDPARENTS READ PROGRAM

The Grandparents Read program is a wonderful initiative that connects the children at Sunnyside to elders in our community through reading.

Volunteers provide support for young readers who are in need of extra practice and encouragement, and support.

SUNNYSIDE 100TH ANNIVERSARY

THE BISON PROJECT

The Bison Project furthers the learning about the Indigenous peoples of this land, the Treaty 7 nations. It emphasizes the great importance of Bison not only as a food source and as a teacher to the Indigenous prairie peoples.

Children learned about local indigenous history, buffalo jumps, and the traditional teachings of the Bison, including the teachings of HONESTY, TRUTH & RESPONSIBILITY.

Sunnyside School - Bison Project

Each classroom was given a supportive educational video created by Blank Page Studio’s Tiffany Freeman, askîy maskihkiwiskwew, and artist/founder daniel j kirk.

In addition, each child was given a woodcut bison to paint, explore their creativity and express the teachings they learned. The result is a colourful, meaningful and powerful installation created by the children along the school fence.

SUNNYSIDE 100TH ANNIVERSARY

Sunnyside School

For the Sunnyside 100th anniversary, students created a celebratory art book under the guidance of Janine Vangool, publisher, editor, and designer of Uppercase Magazine.

We also hosted a 100th-year celebration (and assembly) where Elder Jenny Crowchild spoke to the occasion and was honoured by the school and student body.
